After three weeks in the hospital with my mom and during two weeks in self-isolation recovering from a virus during the time COVID-19 tests were not readily available, I spent my time intensively researching viruses, working on my personal healing, and developing new routines.

To share da Love, I’ll be sending out my discoveries through our award-winning Women’s Biz Coop newsletter and blog.

In this blog, we start to explore my experiences with a virus. Was it the flu or COVID-19? I didn’t know. Testing wasn’t widely available.

Let’s go back to the beginning of March. I’ve been in the hospital for weeks visiting my mom every day. The COVID-19 pandemic was just beginning in the United States as the first case had spread to Washington state from Asia. And I woke up with a scratch in my throat. At first, I thought it was nothing, perhaps the beginning of allergy season. I hadn’t been taking my local bee pollen to ramp up my immunity. So I started drinking tea with bee pollen and told my mom and boyfriend that it’s probably allergies.

Day 2, I started with low-grade fevers. One minute I’m hot, the next I’m internally cold. I’m still visiting my mom since I’m convinced that it’s allergies.

Day 3, the fevers are worse, I’m feeling very low energy with body aches. On the news, symptoms of COVID-19 are circulating. My fever isn’t over 101, so I presume I have the flu.

Day 4, the first case arrived in the area. So far, no one mentioned symptoms of nausea and dizziness. Now I assume that I have a virus. It could be the flu or it could be COVID-19. I don’t know, because there’s no testing available. That’s the last day that I visit my mom in the hospital.

Knowing that I have a virus, yet not knowing which one, I start to heavily research viruses.

“A virus is a submicroscopic infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism.”

If anyone has ever caught a virus, which many of us have, it starts as an independent entity which contains 1) genetic material -either DNA or RNA- that mutates the structure of proteins 2) a protein coat protecting the genetic material and 3) lipid envelopes, allowing the virus to merge with the host cell’s membrane, infecting the host cells.

Common viruses, such as herpesvirus, Hepatitis B, and smallpox, are enveloped viruses, replicating through DNA. Lipid envelopes of enveloped viruses are sensitive to heat and detergents, which means that we humans can sterilize them. That’s why every health department on the planet is recommending you to wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds in warmer water.

Unlike the above mentioned enveloped viruses, coronaviruses, which have been around since the 1930s, use positive sense, single-strand RNA to multiply. It’s a family of viruses including the common cold (rhinovirus), West Nile, SARS, MERS, and COVID-19.

All of these viruses thrive on the following conditions: needing a host, slipping through host cell membranes due to lipid envelopes, and using the cells of the host to replicate.

When viral particles enter our bodies, what happens inside?

  1. Our front line, our innate immune system, responds (a non-specific response to any new particle).
  2. RNA interference against viruses kicks in by neutralizing targeted viral invaders and boosting our cells’ survival.
  3. Our bodies start producing antibodies: first IgM, which neutralizes viruses for a few weeks, and then IgG, which neutralizes viruses indefinitely.
  4. Our second line kicks into gear:
    • T-cells, which take down any viral suspects.
    • Macrophages, Pac-Women-like cells, which eat anything their way that doesn’t jive with healthy proteins.
    • Interferons, a type of protein in the class Cytokine, which hold up intruder flags, alerting other normal host cells to kick in any anti-viral defense. Go, team!
      • How do you know that interferons are at your service? Fevers, muscle pain, and other flu-like symptoms are happening. You’ll feel worse before you’ll feel better.
      • I’ll get into a killer T-cells and macrophages dive in another email: How I Healed Myself.

So besides washing and detergents, what else can help our bodies?

  1. Vaccines, weaker versions of viruses, can help build immunity.
  2. Antivirals, fake DNA or RNA-building blocks, can stop the replication of viruses, such as herpes, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Alrighty now, since we don’t have a vaccine or any antivirals available, we are left with our immune systems to defend us against a virus.

As all of you know, I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. I am a person with an internet connection, who spent 3-4 years being really sick and researched about the body and healing.

Here’s a video on taking a stand for your health or anything in your life that could help:

I’ll delineate my further research and subsequent protocols in another post: How I Healed Myself.

We are so grateful for all of our friends and front-line, essential employees: first responders, grocery stores clerks, sanitation and utility personnel, warehouse workers, delivery folks, nurses, doctors, EMTs, civil service workers, farmers, pharmaceutical personnel, mail carriers, truckers, state government employees, military personnel, bank tellers, non-profit leaders, and journalists.

To rest of you, thank you for staying home, staying safe, and staying healthy!
