Are You Indecisive? (Part 2)

by @ShiuanButler

Oftentimes as women, we like to get other people’s opinions when we’re trying to make a decision. We’re not completely sure of ourselves or we try to weigh all of the factors so we turn to others. There’s nothing wrong with having a board or a committee of advisors and gathering expertise. However, it’s not their life nor will they be dealing with the consequences. Oftentimes we ask others what they think because we don’t trust ourselves and our minds.

A good practice when you are tempted to seek others’ advice can be to stop yourself, notice what you are doing, and say “Nope, I am going to trust my own brilliant mind instead.” Even if you do make a mistake (I love the quote: There is only feedback, not failure) you will learn from it much more than if you had simply taken someone else’s advice.

Note: This tends to be more of an issue for women than for men. Men are generally raised to always act confident, whether they feel it or not; and never ask for help (frustrated wives or girlfriends, anyone?). Women are raised to be caretakers, make sure everyone else’s needs are taken care of before their own. No wonder we don’t know what we think or want half the time. Or when we do, we still doubt ourselves.

As is often the case, life lessons are business lessons.
